In 1969, at the age of 18, he opened a small shop called People’s Place in his hometown of Elmira, New York. He sold bell-bottoms, denim jackets, and rock-inspired pieces to a young, local crowd. Hilfiger was always drawn to music, street culture and youth style, and he used that energy to build something different. Though the shop eventually went bankrupt, he didn’t give up. Instead, he moved to New York City and focused on learning the business of fashion. By 1985, he launched the Tommy Hilfiger brand with a bold debut collection that reimagined American classics with a modern twist. His first major campaign made waves with its confidence and energy, instantly setting the tone for what the brand would become, fresh, fearless, and full of attitude.
