Behind The Brand: Paul Smith

BY Natasha Bailey ON 15 July, 2025

Sir Paul Smith is one of the most influential names in British fashion. Known for his unique blend of traditional tailoring and playful design, Smith has built a brand that reflects both his personal charm and his deep respect for the history of fashion.

Over the course of more than five decades, he has transformed from a young man with dreams of becoming a racing cyclist into a globally recognised designer, admired for his distinctive approach to menswear and his enduring dedication to craftsmanship.

Born in Nottingham in 1946, Paul Smith entered the world of fashion by accident. After a serious cycling accident at seventeen, his aspirations in sport were put to rest. It was during his recovery that he began to associate with students from an art college and was introduced to the world of design. Encouraged by his then-girlfriend and now-wife, Pauline Denyer, Smith took evening classes in tailoring and eventually opened his first shop in 1970.

That first shop, located in Nottingham, was just three metres square. In it, Smith sold clothing that reflected his interest in classic British tailoring with unexpected, often humorous, twists. By 1976, he presented his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label. The collection established a foundation that the designer would continue to build on: a combination of impeccable tailoring, traditional fabrics, and surprising elements such as bold linings, coloured buttonholes, or mismatched patterns.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Paul Smith expanded his brand significantly. He opened stores across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia, and developed collections for women, children, accessories, and homeware. Despite his growing empire, Smith remained committed to the core principles that had defined his early success.

One of the most iconic aspects of the Paul Smith brand is the signature stripe. Composed of fourteen colours, this vibrant design reflects Smith’s belief in optimism and individual expression. Far from being a mere branding device, the stripe represents the fusion of art, culture, and fashion that has characterised Smith’s work for decades. It has appeared on everything from scarves to bicycles and is now synonymous with the designer’s playful spirit.

A significant part of Paul Smith’s legacy is his role in preserving and adapting British style. In a world often driven by trends and fast fashion, Smith has remained focused on continuity and quality. He has shown how classic tailoring can evolve without losing its identity. By incorporating elements of streetwear, sportswear, and global culture, his collections continue to appeal to new audiences while staying true to their roots.

In 2000, Smith was knighted for his services to British fashion, a recognition that marked not only his commercial success but also his cultural impact. Despite his accolades, he remains closely involved in the daily operations of his company, continuing to design, curate shop interiors, and support emerging designers.

Today, Paul Smith stands as a symbol of longevity and innovation in the fashion world. He has navigated shifting trends and economic changes with a clear vision, a sense of humour, and a respect for the craft of clothing. In an era where many designers have come and gone, his enduring presence serves as a reminder that fashion, at its best, can be both timeless and surprising.
